Michelle Albert 3Congratulations to Michelle Albert, M.D., winner of a 2014 Red Dress Award from Woman’s Day for her commitment to eliminating heart disease in women. An adviser to Fierce, Dr. Albert is also the Vivian Allen Beaumont Endowed Professor and chief of cardiovascular medicine and director of cardiovascular research at Howard University.

Dr. Albert has dedicated her career to research into the racial and gender-specific aspects of heart disease. Her recent work has looked at the role of job stress, inflammation, discrimination and neighborhood stressors in heart disease.

She arrived in the United States from her native Guyana, South America, at age 14. “Growing up in Guyana, I saw and experienced firsthand how poverty is reflected in medical problems,” Dr. Albert says. “This is one of the reasons my work also looks at the links between socioeconomic status, discrimination and cardiovascular disease.”
