15. She’s Got Game
Michele Roberts has been shaking up things as she gets up to speed and strategizes in her new role as executive director of NBA Players Union.
“When I was hired as executive director, I promised the players we would build a team of gladiators to represent their interests,” she said.
Roberts is the first woman at the helm of a major sports union in North America. She wants to make sure that players get a fair deal in their next agreement with the NBA, which sealed a nine-year TV deal worth $24 billion.
She’s ready to battle over salary caps, minimum ages, revenue splits and other issues. A former public defender who has also represented major corporations, Roberts was a partner with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meager and Flom, LLP, a prestigious law firm in Washington.
