Dieters who participate in online weight management programs and “friend” other members are more successful at losing weight than dieters who use the programs, but do not connect with others.

Scientists at Northwestern University report that participants in a recent study who chose not connect with other dieters lost about 5 percent of their body weight over six months.Those who made 10 or more friends in an online dieting program lost 8 percent.

The study focused on online weight loss systems like CalorieKing.com.
